Flooding and ice warning follows snow falls

Flooding and ice are among the dangers motorists are being warned to beware of as the snow begins to thaw.

More snow fell on the Dover and Deal area on Wednesday, January 13, but it didn't lay.

The latest falls came only days after drifting snow blocked main roads into Deal at the weekend.

But now the snow is beginning to melt and there are warnings this could lead to floods, particularly on roads where snow drifts have built up at the side. Near the Duke of York's Royal Military School and the Ringwould straight, both on the Dover - Deal road, are two areas where this is likely.

And at night, when temperatures drop to below freezing, water on the road surface could turn to ice.

High winds overnight on Friday evening lifted snow from the fields, which filled the low land at Oxney Bottom on the Dover-Deal route and also the flat marsh area between Worth and Burgess Green towards Sandwich.

Motorists early on Saturday had to cope with long delays but by midday the traffic was moving again, although slowly.

Dover Coastguard Station staff on duty overnight were blocked in until the next shift could arrive from their homes.
