A man is urging people throughout Kent to fly the Union Flag for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. And he also wants church congregations to sing the National Anthem on the jubilee Sunday.

Graham Wanstall, who is a member of the Flag Institute, says there are many unused flag poles around the district, and wants businesses and individuals to be more patriotic.

“There has been a slow response to my campaign, but I have only received support or some indifference,” he said. “No one was been negative about it. They mainly think it is a good idea.

“As a nation, we have more unused flag poles than most other countries. There is still time for people to get Union Flags to fly, but they don’t often know where to get good quality flags from.

“We want to see as many Union or St George flags flying for the jubilee as possible and, of course, flags attract attention. That’s why you see flags being flown from cafes alongside the main roads.”

Mr Wanstall, who lives in Dover, wrote to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, asking if churches would include the National Anthem in their services on Sunday June 3.

“I have received a reply from one of his chaplains saying that it’s a good idea, but not a matter for the Archbishop himself. He has suggested that I contact church newspapers.

Mr Wanstall is no newcomer to upholding British traditions. He has helped preserve the red K6 telephone boxes and last year tried to prevent a traditional pavement at Victoria Park in Dover from being resurfaced with tarmac.
