A co-owner of Deal’s seaside cycling cafe Route One has organised a fundraiser to remember cyclist Daniel Squire, while raising money for Kelly Turner.

Gary Holmes wants to remember Daniel for the love he had for cycling and is holding a bike ride from the Beach Street cafe on Saturday.

He is also raising money for teenage cancer sufferer Kelly Turner and has asked for donations towards the fund to help the 16-year-old get lifesaving treatment in the USA.

Yvonne and Isabelle Hankin

Experienced cyclists will lead the 35-mile route, starting from Deal at 8.30am, travelling through Sandwich, Minster, Preston and Richborough before returning.

Mr Holmes describes the cycle as “up beat and very low key” with self-navigation.

Daniel was just 18 when he was killed after a collision with a van on the A258 Dover to Deal Road at Ringwould on Saturday, September 7, 2013.

The keen triathlete was cycling from his mother’s home in Reach Close, St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe and was just minutes away from his father’s house.

The former St Edmund’s School pupil died the next day. His parents Simon and Tracy donated his organs, improving the lives of four others.

Mr Holmes said: “As chairman of Deal Tri from 1999-2011, I had known Dan since he joined the club as a junior and rode with him most weekends.

“We try to do something around the date he was killed each year, so as part owner of Route One Cycle cafe, I wanted to do something that would involve local cycling clubs and also do a positive thing for Kelly.”

Co-owner of Route One, Yvonne Hankin will be making cookies for anyone who donates, giving a percentage of all sales from riders who buy them.

The cafe is appealing to businesses to donate prizes towards the raffle in aid of Kelly.

Mr Holmes added: “We have already received a donation of £250 which is great.”
