BONES found in Dover's Market Square are believed to be ancient human remains.
Sub-contractors, digging up the road for Kent Highway Services discovered a skull and some larger bones at about 1pm on Thursday, May 19.
Police spokeswoman Rosy Alexander said: "We believe bones have previously been found in that area and they have been archaeological, not recent.
"There was a second area where workmen were dumping rubble and more bones have been found there."
Police were called at 1.20pm and attended until about 3pm.
Work was suspended while officers conducted enquiries.
Mrs Alexander said lots of bones have been discovered in the town centre area over the years, and some have been proven to be animal remains.
The bones will be sent to a university for tests.
"If they are more recent bones, it may be a case for the coroner," she added.
