A heartbroken family is preparing to spend Christmas without their dad – who remains unconscious in hospital two weeks after falling down the stairs.

Simon Norton, 40, was found by wife Katie following the fall at their home in Walmer, near Deal in the early hours of Sunday, December 11.

He spent 10 days in the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, but has since been moved to Kent and Canterbury Hospital to be closer to the expert team looking after him.

His wife Katie Norton says specialists still don't know why he isn't waking up and Mr Norton is set for a Christmas in hospital undergoing countless tests to try to find a diagnosis.

Despite the most difficult time ahead, Mrs Norton, 40, says she is determined to do all she can to make Christmas as magical as possible for the 11 children the couple have between them.

"I try to stay strong and keep the family all together but it is difficult near Christmas," she said.

"Simon and I did all our Christmas shopping together and we were so looking forward to it.

"I've got all of his children’s presents wrapped up from him and of course I’ve got all of mine, which he thought he hid well but I know where they are.

"I’m not going to open any. I’ll wait and once he’s better and he can come home, we can redo Christmas.

"I'm going to give my children a fantastic Christmas at home, but I'm going to be going to the hospital for at least an hour and I’ve got a present made for him.

"It won’t be long because I’ll have to get home and get Christmas dinner sorted.

"It’s going to be busy so I have promised them we will still have a good Christmas because every year I make such a big effort, so we have to continue regardless.

"He would be really mad at me being here all the time with him.

"He would tell me to go home and have fun with the kids but I want to be with him as much as I can.

"If he opens his eyes, I want it to be my face that he sees first."

Mrs Norton previously told KentOnline she and her husband had been out with friends to watch the England World Cup match against France just hours before the incident.

They returned home and went to bed as usual, but Simon fell when he got up to go to the toilet in the night.

Mr Norton was taken out of a coma on Monday but doctors are trying to find out why he is still unconscious.

Mrs Norton added: "He still hasn't woken up and doctors still don’t know why.

"He is still in the same situation with the brain damage on the frontal lobe. There is a part of the brain that is damaged, which is affecting the left side of the body.

"The doctors are still stumped and are testing him for really rare diseases.

"We have been told to prepare for the long haul. It is going to be a long recovery and he will need a lot of rehabilitation so it’s not going to be quick.

"The kids just want to see their daddy."

The couple, who between them also have a grandson, as well as a granddaughter on the way, have only been married since September and have been together for just over a year.

They first met when they were aged 13 at Castle Community College in Deal, which is now Goodwin Academy.

For the past 21 years Arsenal fan Mr Norton has worked at St Anselm's Nursing Home in Walmer as a carer.

To support the family financially while he is out of work, friends have set up a Go Fund Me page.

So far more than £2,300 has been raised.
