In this week's Dover Mercury

Published: 08:32, 20 June 2013

The district council has approved plans to develop the Western Heights and Farthingloe with houses, a hotel, conference centre and other facilities. But objectors maintain their opposition and the Secretary of State may have the final say.

Dover's new police chief Steve Barlow says his officers will target problems in the town including those caused by drunks and drug addicts, following a tirade of complaints on social media site Facebook.

Staff and customers had a shock when they arrived at a Dover store this week which had undegone a refit, only to find the work had not been completed and the store - including a normally busy Post Office - was still closed.

And the man who discovered most of Dover's Roman past, including the Painted House, is among those in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Dr Brian Philp has been awarded the MBE.

All these stories, together with a two-page picture spread on the open weekend at the Napoleonic fort on the Western heights, can be found in this week's Dover Mercury, out today.
