A man has been flown to hospital after falling from cliffs in Dover.

The 27-year-old had been walking at Langdon Battery near the Docks just before 6pm last night when he slipped and suffered ankle injuries.

Dover Coastguard called up Coastguard Rescue Teams from Deal, Langdon Battery and Folkestone.

Specialist cliff gear was used to reach the injured man, with three paramedics, an ambulance and the Hazardous Ambulance Response Team (HART) on standby.

But, as the man grew colder, the rescue helicopter was scrambled to airlift him to Margate hospital.

Ian Born, Dover Coastguard watch manager, said: "Accidents can happen, but my advice is to make sure you are properly equipped for walking along coastal paths.

"Never attempt to climb up or down cliffs unless you are properly equipped and trained to do so.

"Carry a mobile phone, tell people where you are going and if you do get into difficulty call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
