Revellers at the Kent Miners’ Festival on Bank Holiday Monday can learn all about the history of coal at Tilmanstone.

The free community event has moved to Elvington from Fowlmead in Sholden and Aylesham to celebrate the centenary of coaling at Tilmanstone Colliery.

Gary Cox, chairman of the KMF committee, said: “Thanks to everyone at the Tilmanstone Welfare Club for being this year’s hosts and for their generous donation towards the special centenary booklet, that will be on sale for £1 only, on the day.

“This booklet encapsulates the entire history of Timanstone Colliery and will be a keepsake for many to cherish.”

Mr Cox said this year’s Kent Miners’ Festival will be another special free festival not to be missed. There will be colliery brass bands, mining heritage and charity marquees, crafts and displays, sporting action with boxing, six-a-side football tournament and football training, friendly tug-o-war, stunt bikes will provide the action and there will be canine competition with a friendly dog show.

He added: “This year you can leave your cars behind and visit us by train as we are teaming up with East Kent Railway. Also free buses are being laid on by Thomsett’s Coaches for visitors from Deal and Roberts Coaches from Aylesham.

And parents who are bringing their children can find Ken Buxey and his team of Deal & Walmer Lions, to pick up your identity bracelets to stop anxieties if a child gets lost.
