Lane markings changed at roundabout after Mercury highlights dangers

Markings on a roundabout which led to vehicles having to change lanes at the last minute have been altered after the situation was highlighted in the Dover Mercury.
It was in May that we published photos of the Limekiln roundabout on the A20 which showed that motorists heading towards Folkestone were taking the left lane, only to find they needed to be in the central lane to continue on the main road.
The left lane took them towards the cruise terminal and the frieght clearance facility.
As a result, they were moving right to get into the central lane, and were in danger of colliding with vehicles already in that lane, having come from the right lane on Limekiln Street.
There were a number of near-misses, many of them involving lorries heading away from the docks.
Now the road markings have been changed, and the white lines which directed the vehicles into the left lane have been covered over.
Vehicles coming out of the left lane of Limekiln Street now have two lanes to choose from, freight clearance and the A20.
Vehicles emerging from the right lane go into the right lane of the roundabout to continue on the A20 dual carriageway, or go around the roundabout to head back towards the town.
