Stall holders at Dover’s new Tuesday market are heading indoors during the next few months, but say they will be out again in April.

The Bluebird Market was set up in the Market Square and Cannon Street in November to boost trade in the town centre.

The stall holders say they are determined to continue trading despite the harsh winter weather.

Every Tuesday next Tuesday (Jan 15) to the end of March the former Ernest Newson shop in the Market Square will host the stalls. Twelve have secured a spot there and say the indoor market will open weekly from 9am to 2pm, with special events planned for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

The street market returns to Cannon Street on the April 2.

Tersons letting agents approved the temporary use and the district council has agreed to waive business rates on a short-term basis.

"The Bluebird Market, with an average of 30 stalls each week, has been a huge success for both the Town Team and local entrepreneurs starting a new venture," said town team member David Little.

"It has helped revitalise the town centre, bringing a much needed boost to the independent shops too. Local people have been hugely supportive of the venture so far and it’s hoped that bringing the market indoors will mean this will continue.

"Having spoken with the traders, January to March can be a difficult time. However we are determined to keep Tuesday as market day, albeit on a smaller scale."
