Motorists who are ignoring road closure signs in flooded areas are putting their lives at risk according to Kent Highways and Kent Police.

The temporary closure of the Alkham Valley Road, between the Slip Lane junction and the Standen Lane junction has been enforced because of flooding and pot holes.

The police have since received reports of some motorists ignoring road closure signs and becoming abusive to staff dealing with the problems.

The road will remain shut while important work takes place to reduce the flooding.

The deputy director of highways and transportation at Kent County Council, David Hall, said: "Please observe the road closures and restrictions; they are there for a good reason.

"If you ignore them you are not only putting yourself at risk, but the safety of staff dealing with the problems and other local residents.

"You are also hampering the work done to bring water levels back to normal.'

A man and two women had to be rescued by Kent Fire & Rescue Service at Slip Mill Lane in Hawkhurst, Cranbrook on Monday evening after they ignored the road closure sign.

They had to wait on the roof of their car for help to arrive.
