Deal and Dover MP Charlie Elphicke will be taking part in this year’s Breakthrough Breast Cancer Crocus Walk.

The walk on Saturday, April 5, from Walmer Castle gravel pit car park to The White Cliffs Hotel in St Margaret’s, will be the ninth.

Entry is £5 and includes a buffet courtesy of The White Cliffs’ Hotel proprietor Gavin Oakley. The walk back to Walmer is optional.

Mr Elphicke said: “I’m hoping it will be really great fun. I just hope people will be understanding and generous.”

Breakthrough ambassador Kerry Rubins, who lost her close friend Julie Mortimer to breast cancer in 2010, said: “We’ve just topped 100 registrations.

"Our record is 138, that was Julie’s year. We would like to smash that total.”

Mr Elphicke added: “Kerry Rubins is an inspiration. She’s the most incredible campaigner, working to combat this horrible disease. The work she does fills me with admiration.

“I often attend her events, and I thought this was something I ought to take part in.

“So many people come and take part and there is such a feeling of hope.”

In east Kent, 575 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 171 die from the condition every year. The walk is a chance to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer and raise funds for future improvements.
