It is hoped a new adventure golf course will open at the same time as the popular paddling pool next door, its owner has revealed.

Michael Humphries is keen for the two attractions on Walmer Green in Deal to open by the end of May.

Construction of the new adventure golf course started in February

He will run them in conjunction with each other, but with separate entrances.

The new 18-hole attraction, to be known as Roman Landings, is Mr Humphries’ second venture of its kind.

He already runs adventure course Rascal Bay in Manston, Thanet.

Its design references the area’s history including smugglers, fishing and both Walmer and Dover Castles.

Water will run through the course with players expected to pull themselves across some areas using a raft.

The attraction will feature 18 holes

The scheme was passed by planners in February 2021, with construction beginning four weeks ago.

Some councillors thought it would be a “great asset” to the town, while others thought it was being located in the “wrong place”.

It was passed with conditions that the public toilets be signposted and the green space would be reinstated should the venture end up not being viable.

Diggers have so far cleared turf, levelled the ground and started to lay out the course.

Meanwhile, its specially designed features and rafts are being constructed in a workshop.

Mr Humphries said: “It was a long wait to get started but it’s good to finally see people on site building and we’re starting to see the shape of the course come together.

“We’re really excited to see it progress over the next eight weeks and open for the summer, along with the paddling pool.

“We are hoping both will be open by the end of May.”

Once open, the attraction will offer a booking option as well as children’s parties.

Renovations are also taking place to the exterior and surface of the paddling pool.

Mr Humphries took over the lease last summer and intends to keep it free for as long as possible.

He said: “It makes sense for everybody that we run both sites.

“It gives us more chance for the paddling pool to remain free to use. We know that people want that.”

Together, the attractions will create 10 new jobs including a cook and a course supervisor.
