An American supper has raised nearly £2,500 for victims of the war in Ukraine.

The money will go to a fundraising appeal that is sending around £30,000 a week in aid to the country.

The event, at the Alma pub in West Street, Deal, last Saturday, raised £2,473.

The event was a sellout.

It was organised by Kerry Banks and Jonothan Bowles.

It had music from the Margate five-piece soul and funk band Play.

Mrs Banks said: "Huge thanks must go to everyone that attended and the Alma that gave us the venue for free. Thanks also go to the staff who worked incredibly hard all night."

The money raised will go to the Deal Kent Ukraine Appeal, which was set up just after the invasion by Russia in February.

The £2,473 will be used to buy supplies needed in a new camp in Ukraine for more than 600 displaced people who are having to stay in a sports hall.

DKUA is currently raising around £30,000 a week to help victims.

The group has recently taken on the grim task of arranging for 100 body bags to be sent after a request from contacts in Ukraine. These have now been donated by funeral director firms in Deal.

DKUA has otherwise updated its list of items needed.

These are: nappies, incontinence pads, baby wipes, soaps, roll-on deodorant, pasta, cup-a-soups, longlife milk, porridge, sanitary towels, Vitamin C tablets, bandages, in-date prescription medications, medical supplies and first aid kits.

They can be dropped off at the Maxted's Pet, Aquatic & Garden shop at 136 High Street, Deal.
