The organisers of the new street market due to be launched in Dover in November are offering a special deal to traders.

The Bluebird Market is being organised by the Town Team which was formed to bid for Dover to become one of the Portas Pilot towns, with the offer of £100,000 to help rejuvenate the town centre.

The bid was unsuccessful, but the town team are pressing ahead with their plans to boost trade and attract more visitors.

“More than 350 local people and organisations gave us letters of support which showed how much feeling there is in the town to get things improved,” said town team chairman Louise Miller (pictured left).

“It was disappointing that we were not selected for the Portas initiative funds, because it is clear that Dover is in desperate need of investment and regeneration to turn it around.

“We are determined to press ahead with as many of the ideas and initiatives which were developed for the bids as can be funded.

“We have already secured money and other contributions from a number of organisations to start a weekly Tuesday street market, with smart new stalls and high quality established vendors.

“We really hope people will be able to attend and support the market. Across the UK there are examples of town centres being revitalised by their presence. As well as local people, we hope that visitors from out of town can give a much-needed boost to the independent shops in Dover.”

As an introductoy offer, the town team is giving seven weeks for the price of six, which will include every Tuesday from the market’s launch on November 6 to December 18 at a cost of £70.

Dover already has a Saturday market.

“We will be delighted to accommodate existing stallholders and traders,” said Mrs Miller. “Between us we can create a bustling market full of high quality goods.”
