The Mercury has been inundated with name suggestions for Deal’s new nightclub.

Reader’s ideas include Deal Flix, Moving Pictures and Picturehouse in homage to the building’s former use as a cinema.

Others have thought of names such as C-Side, The Bay and Stones, linking the club with its coastal roots.

Something different came from Jill Martin. She posted on Facebook: “Rivals stands on the site of the once Odeon cinema. The first Odeon cinema was opened by Oscar Deutsch, so why not call it Oscar’s?” Martin Tapsell said the Odeon cinema, which dates from 1936, was built on the site of Admiralty House. He suggested Admiralty nightclub.

Other names put forward for the two bars – formerly the Academy and Rivals – include Flemings, Moonraker, Funky Beats, The Hut, Red, Dealites Nights, Smugglers, Guilty Pleasure, Albys Revived, Ten to Two, NYC Naughty Young and Carefree, Sin, Revivals, Waves, Next Chapter, Pheonix, New Beat, Warehouse, Flix, Reflections, Euphoria and Deja Vu.

New owner Paul Blair, of Media Leisure Ltd, listened to some of the suggestions.

He said: “I don’t believe we can have cinema names because of Odeon restrictions.”

He liked the coastal names.

He said: “We have some seaside names as well. Currently the building itself could be The Ocean Rooms, the club would be Channel Club and we’re not sure on the bar, but it could be the Reef Bar.”

He said he would like to draw a line under the name of the club by next week and then get the ball rolling for hiring staff.

He assured the Mercury the club would still open on Good Friday.

He said: “Without a doubt, we’re still pushing for Easter weekend.”

He has thanked readers for getting involved with the name suggestions.

To apply for work at the new nightclub, call in and see Mr Blair at the Queen Street premises. Leave your CV in the club if he is not there, or email hr@media-leisure.co.uk.
