The district council has agreed to reduce the charges in a Dover car park on Tuesdays in an attempt to encourage visitors to the town and, in particular, to the new weekly market which is due to be launched next month.

David Little, of the Town Team organisation, which is behind the Bluebird Market initiative, said the agreement on half-price parking charges was reached at a meeting with the council.

District council leader Cllr Paul Watkins said: "We are very pleased to welcome the launch of the Bluebird Market and we wish organisers every success.

"As a range of regeneration initiatives continues to move forward for Dover, projects like this can really help to bring communities together and attract visitors to the town."

The market is due to start on Tuesday, November 6 at 9am and anyone interested in having a stall can contact the Town Team on 07754 145551 or email team@dovertown.co.uk

Thurloo Parrott of the Hythe Bay Seafood Restaurant on the seafront, is also introducing a 10% Tuesday scheme to encourage shopkeepers, pubs and restaurants to get involved on Market Day and create “a really busy feel”.

Students at K College will be decorating hoardings and walls on the corner of York Street, Bench Street and Townwall Street.

The Town Team also wants to create a Bluebird Trail, connecting the town centre with the Eastern Docks, cruise terminal and Dover Castle, and they will be explaining their plans to Dover Harbour Board and other partners next week.

“As a team we’ve made no promises or guarantees,” said Mr Little. “There’s just a small group of us beavering away with very limited resources, hoping to make a small difference.”
