A controversial new housing development is on the table despite objections from town and parish councils.

The estate proposed for Sandwich Road, Sholden, includes 117 houses with 35 of them, 30%, being affordable housing.

The outline application, by Richborough Estates Limited, is set to be decided by Dover council on Thursday. September 16

The site covers almost five hectares and the estate would also include a playpark.

Most of the properties, 63 houses, would have three bedrooms and 23 two bedrooms.

It comes after a plan to build 210 houses at Betteshanger Park and Almond House, round the corner from Sandwich Road, were approved in May. That application was by Quinn Estates.

Planning officers have recommended the development is approved despite strong opposition from councils.

District planning councillors will vote on the scheme this week

In a report, planning officers said: “There are thousands of people objecting to major planning applications in Deal, Sholden and the surrounding areas”.

Deal Town Council and Sholden Parish Council have both objected to the proposal.

The councils questioned whether enough affordable houses would be built.

In total, 33 objections have been raised with most saying Sandwich Road would become more congested and would lead to a loss of green space.

Dover District Council’s planning committee has its meeting at the authority's headquarters at the White Cliffs Business Park, Whitfield, on Thursday, September 16, at at 6pm.
