An afternoon tea and a blindfolded football match have ensured the pounds keep rolling in for Freddie Penny’s appeal.

And more is promised for the blind two-year-old from Deal, with an all-day family event at The Farrier pub today (Saturday).

There will be food, a raffle and live music throughout the afternoon and evening.

Freddie has septo-optic dysplasia. It is hoped a 14-day stem cell therapy course, costing £25,000, at the Unique Access Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, could allow him to finally see.

Last Saturday, Freddie’s mum, Robyn Gough, organised an afternoon tea and a blindfolded football match raising £1,500.

The tea was held at St Finbarr’s Church in Market Place, Aylesham, before the match in the afternoon at Aylesham Leisure Centre.

Players were blindfolded and chased a ball which had a bell inside.

Miss Gough said: “I want to thank everyone who took part in the blind football match.

“I am so grateful for all your support. You were all amazing and definitely entertaining!

“I also want to thank everyone who attended the afternoon tea and those who kindly baked their own cakes to sell.

“With money given at the afternoon tea and players’ sponsorship from the football match, we raised a staggering £1,500.

“I’m so overwhelmed.”

Since Freddie’s appeal was launched in October, about £10,000 has been raised.

Events have included a Halloween party hosted by roving dining club, Run Ashore, and a golf day at Boughton Golf Club, near Faversham.

The Railway Swing Band has also said it will donate half of the money raised at its annual Christmas concert at St George’s Church on Wednesday, December 14, to Freddie’s cause.

Deal Icebreakers, who run the Boxing Day Dip, have also pledged to support the youngster.
