Passengers are being warned of a rail line's services wiped out for the day after a lorry hit a railway bridge.

It happened this morning at Wingleton Lane, Sutton, just south of Walmer station.

The high skip lorry ended up jammed against the low Ripple Court Bridge, which is just 11ft 6in.

Southeastern, in a tweet, just before 9am, said: "Due to a road vehicle striking this bridge services in the area are being held while a team go and assess the damage."

The company warns that trains between Dover and Ramsgate were being stopped.

An update tweeted at 9.35am said: "The bridge has sustained damage so (the)line may be closed until the end of the day."

Network Rail Kent and Sussex explained that the skip lorry was wedged under the bridge.

It said the vehicle could not be moved in case the bridge fell when this was done.

The organisation tweeted at 10.56am: "Our bridge inspector is not happy to reopen the railway, and a structures engineer is on the way to have a detailed look.

"We will run a test train to see how the structure behaves shortly, so if you see it passing, that's why."

The line was reopened that afternoon but with a severe speed restriction over the bridge.
