A resident is calling for speed traps to be installed after three accidents in three days in the same residential street.

Jo Rogers is among those raising concerns about speeding in St Richard's Road in Deal - particularly between the junctions of Court Road and Lydia Road.

In the three years she has lived there she says she has witnessed a steady rise in accidents, culminating in three on three consecutive days last week.

The first at about 6.20pm last Tuesday was a collision after which Amanda Bond, 45, of Downs Road, Deal, was charged with driving while over the prescribed limit.

On Wednesday, a bus clipped a van causing damage to a wing mirror and then on Thursday, the same van was hit again. Neither vehicles stopped.

Now, Ms Rogers is calling on the police and local authorities to step up and enforce changes.

She said: "It's always been a busy road and we knew that when we moved here but it's the regularity that's so shocking. Three in three days was just ridiculous.

"It's treacherous. The cars go whizzing past and you can't fit a parked car, a double decker bus and a moving car in the road. They end up crashing or mounting the kerb.

"Normally when the schools are running, we have children walking to St Mary's, The Downs and Goodwins. We also have runners and dog walkers, many of which walk with ear phones in.

"And there's Dossett Court, accommodation for the elderly. We even have signs warning driver that elderly live here.

"As residents, we're really worried. Is it going to take somebody to be really hurt before they do something?

"I personally would like the police to set up speed traps to catch speeding motorists and something long term to be put it place."

The van that was damaged belongs to Andrew Thompson of Osborne David C Ltd. His mother's car was also hit in the road in December 2019.

His wife Sarah Thompson said: "St Richard's Road is a very busy main road but the volume of traffic and the increased speed people drive along this road and their lack of ability to drive sensibly and within the speed limit is becoming quite dangerous.

"There have been knocks and scrapes but recently it is getting worse and the road is being used as a race track.

"This latest series of events is unbelievable. I am truly concerned that in the not too distant future somebody will be seriously injured or lose their life."

Cllr Mike Eddy, who also lives in the road, has pledged to take up the issue with Deal Town Council and Walmer Parish Council at the earliest opportunity.

He said: "The trouble at the moment is that people during lockdown have got used to speeding.

"Now that lockdown is being lifted there are more cars on the road and accidents are happening."

The former Kent County Councillor says he has previously explored the option of a pedestrian crossing in the road with officers but was told the road was too narrow.

He said: "At the very least we should explore more signs and 30mph reminders or a coloured surface section in the road."
