A stunning picture of the town’s famous Salutation Gardens has won this year’s Sandwich Photographic Competition.

The photograph, showing the Salutation’s Grade I listed manor house framed by trees, with a stream and bridge in the foreground, was taken by Peter Winkworth, lettings manager of estate agents GW Finn and sons’ branch in King Street, Sandwich. It has won £100 for Mr Winkworth, who has been taking photographs for seven years.

This is the fifth year of the competition, organised by former Sandwich Chamber of Commerce president Mike Dallen and the Mercury.

The theme of this year’s competition was “Why should anyone make Sandwich their holiday on the ‘Emerald Coast’?” – which extends to the North Foreland at Broadstairs and the South Foreland at St Margaret’s.

The competition produced 70 photographs of scenes from along the ‘Emerald Coast.’ All entries were sent to the Mercury, and judged by Mr Dallen, Sandwich Mayor Cllr Bernard Butcher, and Mercury editor Graham Smith.

The first, second and third places entries, and all those which were highly commended and shortlisted, are being printed in this week's East Kent Mercury.
