A second foal has been born on a Dover
hillside, and local children are being asked to choose a name for
it.

It’s the latest arrival among a herd
of Polish konik horses which were introduced to the High Meadow
Local Nature Reserve, between Noah’s Ark Road and Coombe Valley
Road, behind Buckland Hospital in February.

One stallion and seven mares were
placed there and it was known that two of the mares were
pregnant.

The first foal was born on Easter
Monday. That was originally named Dorothy after Dover’s first woman
Mayor, Dorothy Bushell.

However, it was then discovered the
foal was a male, so it has been re-named Samson.

On Sunday the second was born,
and has proved no less of an attraction to local people who are
delighted with the new arrivals.

The herd, which belongs to the
Wildwood Trust at Herne, was introduced to graze the hillside and
help with the management of the chalk grassland.

Now, school children in Dover are
being asked to suggest a name for the new foal.

The winning suggestion will be
announced on Name the Foal day, which is being held at
the Nature Reserve on Saturday, August 1.

The winner will receive tickets to
Wildwood at Herne.

In the meantime, the new foal is
doing what comes naturally on a hot summer's day on the hills above
Dover, sleeping!
