Laura Sandys (Conservatives)

The Conservatives' Laura Sandys has swept to victory in South Thanet, ousting Stephen Ladyman, the Labour MP of 13 years.

Ms Sandys scored 22,043 votes, while Dr Ladyman took just 14,426, giving the Tory candidate a huge majority of more than 7,000 - far greater than many had predicted. The results show a swing of almost eight per cent from Labour to the Conservatives.

The Liberal Democrats' Peter Bucklitsch was third with 6,935 votes, with the UK Independence Party's Trevor Shonk fourth.

Speaking at the Margate Winter Gardens after the result was announced, Ms Sandys said: "Becoming a MP is not about the individual, it's all about the team - you need a team that supports you, works tirelessly and shows extraordinary dedication.

"I'll serve all residents with compassion and total devotion but also with determination."

Dr Ladyman had earlier admitted that defeat at the polls would probably spell the end of his political career.

"The real test of dignity is in losing power," he said.

And he fought back tears as he added: "It's been an honour to have served as the MP for South Thanet for the past 13 years. It's been a challenge at times, but it's always been a privilege."
