Dover Castle and Walmer Castle and Gardens are among 40 historic properties run by English Heritage to reopen on July 4.

Following the closure of all of its staffed sites in March as a result of the pandemic, the charity is now preparing to welcome visitors to its larger sites with outdoor spaces.

In Kent, this also includes Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre, St Augustine's Abbey and the Home of Charles Darwin - Down House.

New measures have been introduced to ensure the health and wellbeing of people and all visitors, including members, must book in advance via the English Heritage website.

Visitors must arrive during their time slot but can stay as long as they like.

Kate Mavor, English Heritage’s chief executive, said: “We have really missed our members and visitors while our sites have been closed.

"Whether you’re looking for a fun place for the family to let off steam or just a wide open space to appreciate those familiar landmarks which have stood the test of time, we’re looking forward to giving you a warm and safe welcome back."

The charity hope to reopen the remainder of its staffed sites such as Deal Castle in August.
