Updated plans submitted to convert former bingo hall the Regent on Beach Street, Deal, back into a cinema on seafront

Revised proposals to convert The Regent, on Deal’s Beach Street, back into a cinema have been submitted.

The district council has confirmed it received the amended proposal, dated February 20.

Steve Ellis, of Ellis Designs, who has designed the plans, said: “The plans are exactly the same as originally submitted. The council just asked for a few minor amendments, which I believe is the standard planning process.

“The conservation officer wanted to see a more traditional render at the front.

“I haven’t got a problem with changing things.”

The amended plans show bollards at the front of the building to prevent people from parking there and more traditional features throughout the building.

The tall glass panels in the window spaces at the front will now be made up of three panels, rather than one large panel, offering a more traditional, rather than contemporary look.

In 2011 the district council sold the former bingo hall to Silver Screen Cinemas, and in July 2013 a planning application was submitted for the refurbishment of the building into a three-screen cinema with cafe/restaurant and snack bar.

Flicks cinema in Queen Street closed in 2007, which ended a 71-year history of a cinema in Deal. The return of a cinema would attract thousands of children and families, especially during the school holidays, to Deal.

Owners James Wallace and Mark Digwood, from Kingsdown, are working with Mr Ellis to ensure the planning application covers all bases.

Mr Ellis said: “There are no fixed dates, we’re not going to rush anything.

“It’s going to be good for Deal, I think everybody wants to see it happen. We’re trying to give them a nice scheme that is right.”
