The Mayor has criticised vandals and thieves who have forced the closure of a garden area only eight months after it was opened.

Access to the Charlton Green Lawn, alongside the River Dour next to Morrisons supermarket, has now been locked following a spate of anti-social behaviour, and the theft of a special closing device from the gate.

“What a shame,” said the Mayor, Cllr Mrs Ronnie Philpott, who visited the garden area on Tuesday to inspect the damage.

“The town council paid to have the green fenced, maintained and a stylish 'wave’ bench installed together with a litter bin.

“People wanting a breather after shopping at Morrisons or Asda often sat there in the sunshine. But a few selfish people have spoiled it for everyone.”

A gas hinge on the gate, chosen to avoid toddlers and children getting their fingers trapped, has been sawn off and stolen.

Anyone who sees either theft or damage to public property or people leaving litter or dog mess anywhere in Dover can call either the town council on 01304 242625, or the district council on 01304 872220, as well as Kent Police (999 for a crime in progress, otherwise 01622 690690) to report it.

Full story in the Dover Mercury, Thursday July 29.
