The 20th anniversary of the Deal bombing has been marked with a
private service.
At 8.22am on September 22, 1989, members of the Staff Band of
the Royal Marines School of Music were chatting in their recreation
room in the North Barracks before assembling on the parade ground
for rehearsal when a bomb went off.
Planted by members of the IRA, it killed 10 musicians. Almost a
month after the explosion, another of the badly injured musicians
died, bringing the toll to 11.
The victims were Musician Mick Ball, 24; Musician Andy
Cleatheroe, 25; Band Corporal Trevor Davis, 39; Musician Richard
Fice, 22; Musician Richard "Taff" Jones, 27; Band Corporal Dave
"Mac" McMillan, 21; Musician Chris Nolan, 21; Band Corporal Dean
Pavey, 31; Musician Mark Petch, 26; Musician Tim Reeves, 24; and
Musician Bob Simmonds, 34.
No one has ever been brought to justice for the crime.
A private service was held in the memorial garden built on the
site of the bombing, attended by family and close friends as well
as civic representatives from the area.
