A 39-year-old from Sholden has been charged with drink-driving after a car crashed into a village shop.

The owner of Sholden Village Store in The Street, near Deal, thought they had been ram-raided when he heard a “terrific bang” at the front at about 9.30pm on Saturday night.

Martin Sims, who runs the store with wife Sylvia and lives behind it, raced into the shop to discover a white car "embedded" in the front.

However, the building had only sustained superficial damage and is still open to customers.

Police arrested Ronald Adams, 39 of The Street, Sholden, and he has since been charged with drink-driving.

A spokesman said: "He has been bailed to attend Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, February 26 2020."

Mr Sims said: “It was a massive shock; it’s not something you expect.

“There’s a little bit of damage to the rendering outside and inside some cracks have appeared in the plasterwork and ceiling – but there’s no structural damage, thankfully."
