Betteshanger bowler Scott Whiting has qualified for the Professional Bowls Association World Singles Championships in Great Yarmouth in January.

Whiting, 20, earned his chance to compete against the world’s best 32 players in the BBC televised event at Potters Leisure Resort with an impressive display at the qualifying competition in Bromley.

After three tough opening games, Whiting beat England trialists Steve Mitchinson and Ian Honnor 2-1 on a tie-break before defeating Paul Coleman from Surrey 8-0, 8-2 in the final.

However, there was disappointment for Whiting from Herne Bay, who joined the Betteshanger club in the close season, when the Kent under-25 double rink was announced.

Despite his acheivements, Whiting was only deemed good enough for a reserve spot.

There was better news, though, for team-mates Chris Fox, Joe Kelly and Kieran Moss who have all won a place in the eight-man team to
face Hampshire in October.
