Poll claims 83% of bins are over-spilling in Deal, Dover and Sandwich

Waste collectors have been neglecting the bin at Western Road Playing field for a decade.

That is the claim by another dog walker who was prompted by the Mercury’s story about the park’s overflowing bin last week.

The claim was made the same week as 83% of readers said overflowing litter bins were a regular sight across the district.

Reader Mark Frost commented on our story on our website Kentonline.co.uk after Northwall Road resident Brian Short shamed Dover District Council with this picture on Facebook.

Mr Frost claimed: “The dog bins are often full at Western Road, and have been for the 10 years I’ve walked my dog there.”

"Clearly, we’ve got more to do to demonstrate how we’re working hard to reduce litter" DDC spokesman

A council spokesman apologised last week after the Mercury contacted him on Monday, September 22. That afternoon, the bin, which had been overflowing with of dog mess for more than a week, was emptied. It has remained clear since.

In our poll, 83% of respondents said they had found over-spilling bins across the district; 10% said bins were not overflowing; and 7% said they hadn’t noticed either way.

A DDC spokesman said: “We’re disappointed at the results. Clearly, we’ve got more to do to demonstrate how we’re working hard to reduce litter.

“All our bins are emptied regularly, but where residents see bins that are full, we would urge them to report it to us directly.

“They can help by not using bins for their household waste, which does cause problems in some parts of the district”.
