A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire swept through a Dover house.

Three people were taken to hospital after the blaze broke out in a terraced home, in Barton Road, and spread to neighbouring properties - leaving occupants to dash from their houses to safety.

Now a 49-year-old man, who is being treated at an Essex hospital, has now been arrested on suspicion of arson following the fire yesterday morning.

Kent Police said he is being treated for burns, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Video footage emerged of flames and smoke billowing from the property - as occupants desperately tried to gather belongings.

Four people living in the house were able to leave the building after the smoke alarm went off and they were uninjured at about 8.50am.

Five fire engines, a command unit and an aerial ladder platform were on the scene.

By 11am, the roof of the two-storey building where the fire started had collapsed.

Officers remain at the scene until the building is secure enough to allow fire investigators to enter the property.

Darran Stock, station manager at the Channel Tunnel, was one of the first members of the Kent Fire and Rescue teams to arrive.

He said: "In the early stages of the fire there were lots of personnel on the scene and the house was well alight on the first floor level."

Mr Stock added: "Neighbours had already evacuated themselves and our crews quickly managed to douse most of the source of the fire, although there were still lots of similar areas in the house yet to be attacked.

"The smoke and heat were entering the roof areas of neighbouring properties, but most of the seat of the fire was under control quite quickly."
