The Mayor of Deal Cllr Chris Turner, his mayoress and the Town Sergeant celebrated the launch of historian Gregory Holyoake’s new book Secret Deal and Walmer.
Commissioned by Amberley Press, the book focuses upon little known facts and features of Deal and Walmer with attractive photographs by photographer, Liz Mott.
Invited guests and passers-by, attracted by the window display of original engravings and vintage photographs, enjoyed a lively celebration.
In Secret Deal & Walmer Mr Holyoake explores the history of both town and village and delves beneath the surface to seek out some lesser-known stories and hidden aspects of their heritage.
His engaging exploration uncovers intriguing facts, interesting buildings, surprising tales and the prominent people and colourful characters with links to this corner of Kent.
Different chapters focus on subjects including churches and chapels, murder, mystery and mayhem, entertainment and sport, castles and smuggling.
The book launch took place at Roper’s where the book is available to buy as well as at the Deal Bookshop in the High Street.
The author continues to conduct history walks from The Deal Bookshop every Saturday at 2pm throughout August.
