A popular bar has announced it is closing after plans were approved to demolish the building.
Taphouse Beer Cafe in Deal was reserved a space in the new development which would have replaced the South Street property, but bosses say the arrangement is not “viable”, and the business will shut at the end of this month.
Loyal customers have been expressing their sadness following the announcement, which comes after nine years of operating.
A Facebook post shared on the bar’s page said: “It is with great sadness and disappointment that we have to announce that the Taphouse will be closing as a business on Saturday, April 26.
“The redevelopment will not make the business viable so we have taken this heartbreaking decision.
“We will be having lots of events during the month and a full on leaving party.
“We thank you for your loyalty and support over the nine years.”
In March, Dover District Council (DDC) green lit plans to knock down the bar and the now-closed Hutchings Motorcycles next door, to make way for four retail units and six flats.
As part of the same scheme, adjacent buildings 1 and 3 Middle Street will be converted into four apartments.
Businessman Mark Woolls, who owns Pier View Amusements in Deal and Dymchurch Amusement Park on Romney Marsh, is behind the development.
At the time it was agreed that one of the new shops will be purpose-built and reserved for the Taphouse to move into so the business could continue.
However, it appears this will no longer be the case, with customers saying the closure will “leave a huge gap” in Deal.
Among the 200 people who commented on the bar’s Facebook post, one wrote: “That is just so incredibly sad – you have built up such an amazing business over the years.”
Another said: “That is such shocking and sad news. You created something very special for the town and it will leave a huge gap. I wish you all success in your future endeavours. “
The Taphouse has announced a series of farewell events, including a dance over the Easter weekend called The Last Supper.
KentOnline has approached Mr Wools and the Taphouse for further comment.
