The Port of Dover has introduced a bursary scheme for Dover’s aspiring university students.
The port is offering one bursary a year for students living in and around the Dover area, including postcodes from CT14 TO CT17.
Applications must be submitted before 5pm on January 31.
The scheme is in place to encourage residents to study at university in a port-related field, as well as take on paid work experience at the port.
Successful candidates will receive the equivalent of one term’s fees, up to £3,000 per academic year. The fees will be paid directly to the university.
In the long run, successful applicants could gain future employment in the port once their course has finished.
The bursary is aimed at those aged between 16 to 24 who are due to start their course in September this year. Applicants should choose a study topic relevant to employment at the port.
Examples of port-related courses are: economics and business management, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or marine technology with marine engineering.
To apply, a personal statement no longer than 1,000 words should be sent to the port, stating a proposed topic and where it will be studied.
Tim Waggott, chief executive at the port, said: “This is a unique opportunity exclusive to the young people of our community who we dearly want to succeed.
"I really hope for those wondering about the future that, with some financial support from us, you can see your career ultimately flourishing here in Dover. - Tim Waggott, chief executive, Port of Dover.
"With a little help, you were able to take a university course that made it all possible.
"Please do get in touch, do apply to our bursary scheme and let us help you on the way to a fantastic future.”
The statement should also demonstrate links to the port and how this interest has been taken further through extra activity.
Shortlisted residents will be called for an interview, hosted by a panel of three members from the Port of Dover’s management team. The decision will also be based on the financial and academic merit.
Preference will be given to those students who are talented but whose personal or financial circumstances are making it hard for them.
