The Dover woman who was seriously injured in an accident at Frith Road on Sunday August 1 is slowly improving in hospital.

Four pedestrians were injured when they were hit by a car near the junction with Avenue Road, opposite the Dover Girls' Grammar School. Three of them were on their way to the Sunday morning service at Charlton Church. The fourth, who suffered grazes to her elbow, was going to nearby shops.

Karen Gillham suffered serious leg and head injuries including a fractured skull. The air ambulance landed on the road at a five-way junction with Barton Road, Old Charlton Road, Connaught Road, Castle Avenue and Frith Road.

Mrs Gillham was flown to Queen's Hospital in Romford, Essex, which specialises in the treatment of neurological injuries.

She is in the high dependency unit at the hospital, but is showing signs of slight improvement.

Sue Jarrold and her 15-year-old daughter Lauren, were taken to the William Harvey Hospital at Ashford, but were discharged after treatment. Mrs Jarrold has a hand injury and Lauren suffered an injury to her foot.

Special prayers were said at Charlton Church during Sunday morning's service and the Bishop of Dover, the Rt Rev Trevor Willmott said he would be keeping all those injured in the accident in his prayers.

Police closed the road for several hours while officers from the Serious Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene to determine what had happened.

The teenage driver of a black Vauxhall Corsa, which ended up facing the wrong way in Frith Road, was questioned by officers who seized the car so that it could be examined.
