Council officials say they are reconsidering the policy of switching off the fountain in Market Square and erecting fencing around it whenever a major event is shown on the Big Screen or held in the square.

The fountain has currently been out of action since Wimbledon was being screened at the beginning of the month. It was closed off for Dover Carnival procession, and for the screenings of two operas.

A council spokesman has said it will remain closed for the Cultural Olympiad events this weekend, after which it will be re-opened "as usual".

It has been given a complete service while it was closed.

The spokesman said: "We do understand recent concerns that have been raised regarding the fencing around the fountain, and we are currently reviewing our procedures in this matter for future events."

Last month the Mercury highlighted the situation which means visitors - and townsfolk - who could be enjoying one of the town’s attractions, are faced with metal fencing instead.

The council had confirmed that “as a matter of general policy” the fountain was switched off and fenced off during events on the Big Screen "to help keep sound levels from the screen to a minimum, to help promote safety, and to ensure the fountain is protected from damage".
