British couple die in Dunkirk after taking a ferry from Dover

A British couple have been killed after their car was crushed between two trucks on a road leading from a ferry port in Dunkirk.

The incident happened just after the couple's car had disembarked from a ferry at Loon-Plage.

One of the trucks had stopped suddenly on a road leading from the disembarkation point to highway A16 at around 11.30am local time (10.30am UK time).

The second rammed the couple's car from behind, trapping it between the two trucks, police said.

The couple were both aged in their fifties.

Their identities have not yet been released.

The truck driver, believed to be Polish, hit their car and suffered minor injuries. He told officers he had been unable to stop in time.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office say they are aware of two British deaths in France.

A spokeswoman for DFDS Seaways, which operates a service between Dover and Dunkirk, confirmed the crash and said: "Police are investigating the incident, which took place on the main road leading into the terminal. We are unable to comment on this whilst French police enquiries are taking place."

The spokeswoman could not confirm if the two British people had been passengers on a DFDS ferry.
