Deal mum's desperate bid to stop boy racers

A mum who lives near Tides Leisure Centre claims she is near breaking point because of anti-social youths in cars.

The woman, whose identity the Mercury is protecting, said the young drivers are causing a disturbance to residents and she blamed police and the council for a lack of action.

She said: “Almost every night without fail the same young drivers meet in Tides car park.

“They relentlessly rev their engines, wheel spin and create a personal race track with no care for neighbours or road safety.

“On other occasions in the early hours the drivers take their cars onto Victoria Park’s grassed area and practice handbrake turns leaving behind an utter mess."

In April, 14-year-old Marcus Maslin, was left with a black eye, five lumps on his head, a split lip, a bruised tongue and smashed glasses after an incident at the Deal Skate Park beside Tides.

His mother, Sue Kennedy, says she feels sorry for the nearby residents.

“There’s been plenty of times we’ve gone past and seen groups drinking, swearing, bottles smashed and cars screeching."

Mrs Kennedy said that her son hasn’t left the house since he was attacked. She wants police to carry out hourly evening checks of the area.

Police previously said they had followed all reasonable lines of inquiry into Marcus' incident but there was insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.

District Commander for Deal, chief inspector Stephen Barlow said: “In the last three months Kent Police has received nine calls in relation to anti-social behaviour in the area of Tides and Victoria Park and five crimes have been recorded.

"In three of the crimes no suspects have yet been identified and in the other two cases, support for police in a prosecution was declined.

“Officers are aware of the reported on going issues in the area and they, along with PCSO’s regularly patrol the area.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and patrol accordingly to prevent offences being committed."

A district council spokesman said: "We are liaising with police and partner to look into this. Community safety concerns should be reported t 01304 872220 or email communitysafety@dover.gov.uk"
