THE family of a man who died after being trapped in his burning home have described him as a “smashing man".

Jim Adams, 76, also known as 'Slim’, was a victim of a fire that started on the ground floor of his home at College Road, Deal, just before 2am on Sunday.

Police and neighbours were unable to help Mr Adams escape before firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze.

Mr Adams was born at his family home in Exchange Street, Deal, where his son, Colin, 44, now lives.

His first job was as a cobbler and he later worked for Seeboard and also as a builder.

An amateur boxer, Mr Adams became Regimental British Champion during his time in the national service. He was also a keen golfer and played for many years at Royal Cinque Ports club in Deal.

He leaves a widow, Gwen, who is 69, two sons, Colin and Wayne, 36, and four grand-children.

In a tribute, members of the family stressed that he was a “smashing man and father”.

Mrs Adams said: “We married at St Andrew’s Church in 1961, but we had been courting for seven years before then.”

She added: “I would like to thank our neighbours Neil and Sue Harrop, who opened up their house to everyone on the night of the fire. I am very grateful.”

Mr Adams’ son, Colin, said: “Dad always took pride in his gardening. He was really green-fingered and his lawn always looked fantastic.”

The blaze is not being treated as suspicious.
