A former Deal and River Vicar has been remembered by his family after he died on Tuesday, December 30.
Reverend Peter William Albert Bowers, 78, had been vicar at St George’s Church in Deal and St Peter and Paul Church, River.
He died peacefully with his family around him at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.
In a press statement, his family said: “He was a truly inspirational servant of the Lord in many churches including, St Denys, Sleaford, St George’s in Folkestone and Deal.”

He was born at Mile End Road, Colchester, on December 11, 1936, to the late William and Vera Bowers. Rev Bowers graduated from Kings College University, London, gaining a BD AKC. He was ordained and commenced his curacy at St Peters, Chorley in 1962, 52 years ago.
Among the churches he served in were St Denys, Sleaford and St George’s in Folkestone.
He served as Rural Dean from 1993-2000. He retired in 2002, but continued to preach and undertake ceremonies.
The statement added: “Peter had a natural ability to integrate traditional and modern worship making it meaningful for all generations. He helped so many people find peace, comfort and joy in Christ that his churches had to be extended to accommodate all those who attended.”
The Rev Bowers is survived by his wife, Margaret Bowers, and five children, Jackie Shaba, Karen-Jane Bowers, Debbie Bowers, Edward Rose and Leanne Morris. He had eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Rev Peter Bowers’ funeral will be held on Thursday, January 15 at 11am at St Peters & Paul Church, Minnis Lane, River, Dover.
