Whites boss Nicky Forster has dipped back into the transfer market to sign former Brighton colleague Jamie Smith.
Forster (pictured) has been putting his stamp on things this summer – his first with the club – welcoming a host of new faces into the squad he inherited from Martin Hayes last September.
Steven Thompson, Dean Rance, Calum Willock, Danny Webb, Ricky Modeste and Mitchell Walker have bolstered the ranks and Smith could be followed by the capture of one or two more trialists.
Smith, 22, played at Brighton with Forster and impressed in training, as well as the opening pre-season friendly win at Deal Town.
The diminutive left winger came through the ranks as an attacking central midfielder at Crystal Palace but left without making a first-team appearance and signed for the Seagulls after impressing on trial in the summer of 2009.
He made 10 first-team appearances before being released midway through last season and ended the campaign at Leyton Orient but failed to earn a contract and left after making a solitary first team appearance off the bench at Exeter in April.
Forster said: "I know Jamie from our Brighton days and he has done well. Nobody is guaranteed a place in the team but he’ll strengthen us."
Another trialist, Polish striker Jacek Magdzinski, scored the winner as Whites beat Brighton 3-2 on Tuesday in a game rearranged after Saturday’s initial match was washed out.
Billy Bricknell scored the opener from the spot after Modeste was fouled in the box and after the break, Willock made it 2-0 with another spot-kick after Lloyd Harrington was shoved in the area.
Shannon Jesson pulled one back with a deflected shot and George Barker levelled from the third penalty of the night after Shane Huke hauled back a striker, however, Magdzinski – who impressed Forster during the club’s trial day at the start of the month – pounced from close range late on following a Willock flick to seal victory.
Another trialist who took part in the trial day is set to link up with the Whites for training on Thursday and could join Magdzinski in the line-up for Saturday’s friendly trip to Lewes. Forster said: "Hopefully, they will both be involved on Saturday."
