Teams from Dover have won this year’s Dover-Calais Festival of Sport.
Led by the Mayor, Cllr Ronnie Philpott, more than 205 sportsmen and women crossed the Channel to Calais for this year’s event which marked the 40th anniversary of the festival.
The twin towns have been staging this celebration of sport and keen competition since 1973 with each town taking it in turns to host the event. It involves local sports clubs from various backgrounds.
This year there were 12 activities ranging from football to fencing, and sea angling to bridge.
“Everyone who took part enjoyed friendly matches in the glorious sunshine as well as some great French hospitality and food,” said Cllr Mrs Philpott.
“A gallant effort was made by the Dovorians who succeeded in winning the Victor Ludorum trophy with a score of 13-11. All the competitors went home with commemorative lanyards and exchanged trophies.”
Next year the French teams will visit Dover and anyone interested in taking part should contact Dover Town Council on 01304 242625.
