The Big Screen in Dover’s Market Square is being put up for sale.
District councillors meeting this morning decided to get rid of the screen which was originally provided free of charge by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Members of the council cabinet were told told that LOCOG has gone into voluntary liquidation and there would be “significant financial, maintenance and management issues” if the screen was kept.
It’s temporary planning permission expires next May, and securing permanent planning permission would be “problematic”, according to the council’s head of strategic housing, Paul Whitfield.
Councillors approved the removal and disposal of the screen “at the earliest opportunity” and to fund the re-instatement of the Market Square. They will try to sell it if possible.
