Winter can be one of the best seasons in which to enjoy the varied east Kent countryside, whether by taking a long, leisurely walk or visiting one of the area’s many attractions.
Photographer Martin Apps has been out and about to help highlight some of the opportunities available including a visit to Walmer Castle, which is staging special winter events.
They include a Meet the Gardeners session when the public can meet the castle’s gardening staff and spend a hands-on day pruning and clearing in the woodland. It takes place on Friday, January 27, from 11am to 3pm and costs £30 for members of English Heritage and £35 for non-members. Lunch will be provided.
On Friday, February 17, 11am-1pm, there is a members only event when English Heritage members can enjoy the first signs of spring on a tour of the castle’s gardens, with the gardening staff offering expert advice on plants of winter interest. The cost is £15 with light refreshments.
Two days later, on Sunday, February 19, there is the chance to see how the castle is prepared for the winter months. You can see how the furniture is cleaned and inspected and take the opportunity to ask staff questions about the Heirloom Collection. The cost is £15 for English Heritage members and £20 for non-members. Light refreshments included.
Ticket prices are for adults and entry to the house is included for each event. Pre-booking is essential by ringing 0870 333 1183.
