A CAMPAIGN has been launched to save a cinema in a Kent town after it was revealed it looks set to close.

F.S. Leisure, which runs Flicks cinema in Deal, along with Rivals and the Academy nightclubs next door, has issued letters to Flicks’ husband and wife management team Alan and Rose Thomsett, notifying them that the company anticipates having to make them redundant.

Despite F.S. Leisure insisting the cinema may have a future, the company said that Flicks has been "trading at a loss for some time".

Mr Thomsett, who has worked at the cinema for more than four years, said: "F.S. Leisure claim that we are making a loss but I know how much money we take, and we do well."

F.S. Leisure's account controller Leslie Bishop, who wrote the letters to the Thomsetts, claimed there was no truth in rumours circulating around Deal that the cinema would be replaced with a lap-dancing club.

Deal Mayor Jim Cronk said it would be a "disaster" if flicks closes.

Now staff at Flicks are organising a campaign, backed by the East Kent Mercury. They have collected more than 1,000 signatures for a petition.
