Dover beat off competition from Football League clubs to clinch the signing of former Brighton man Jamie Smith.

The versatile 22-year-old has signed a one-year deal at Crabble and assistant boss Steve Brown is delighted to get him.

Brown (pictured) said: "We know that he had options to join league clubs but he was keen to avoid sitting on the sidelines.

"He’s not guaranteed a shirt here but he certainly has a better chance of playing every week. I like him because he can do a bit of everything.

"He can play on the wing, in behind the striker or as a straight central midfielder so he gives us good options and is technically good.

"I’m sure he has aspirations to get back in the league but to do that he knows he has to impress in Blue Square Bet South."

Whites have a pre-season match at home to Dagenham this Saturday.
