Fowlmead Country Park has provided the backdrop and inspiration to a group of fine art students, who left their studios to be creative outside using materials found on the former coalfield spoil tip.
The artists from the University of Creative Arts, Canterbury, were camping on site during the early stages of their project and are inviting members of the public to see their work at an open exhibition starting next week.
They can be visited on Sunday, March 31, and Easter Sunday, April 1, from 10am until 3pm, and the two sessions form part of the work to be graded during stage two of their degree in fine art.
Julie Sumner from Deal, a part time BA fine arts student, was one of group visiting the country park at Sholden.
She said: “Fowlmead is an inspiration. Its fascinating mining history is still visible with black coal filled earth among the parkland suggesting the darkness and heat of the mines. Being among the slag heaps, the land looks like it has been turned inside out and discarded after being stripped of its previous purpose.”
