A kind-hearted technical repair man in Walmer has built a computer for a family.
The Kent family, who have chosen not to be named, recently applied for aid from Seafarers’ Children’s Support, which is a group of four national charities who work to help the children of people who have worked at sea.
The family were looking for a computer so the children can do their schoolwork and the mum said it would enable her to get back to work because she will be able to access the internet.
Unfortunately, their application did not meet the charities’ criteria.
But instead of ignoring the application, Neil Batey, their local support worker, and Anne Murphy, from Job Centre Plus, approached Graham McManus at Video Stars computer repairs in London Road, Walmer.
Mr McManus kindly agreed to build a computer specially for the family at no charge and donate it to them for their use.
Mr Batey said: “This act of kindness shows not only that there are good-hearted people out there who will give support when needed but also that this organisation, Seafarers’ Children’s Support, will always try to go the extra mile in support of families with a seafaring background.”
Mrs Murphy added: “I can’t believe that Graham has been so generous without even knowing the family concerned.”
Seafarers’ Children’s Support is made up of the Royal Liverpool Seamen’s Orphan Institution, Royal Merchant Navy Education Foundation, Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund and the Sailors’ Children’s Society
Each charity offers varying levels of benefit and each has different qualifying conditions but between them, once the conditions are met, they can offer regular monthly grants or a variety of other funds for a variety of needs.
This can include school uniforms, respite and bereavement care; home computer packages; school or university fees; and books and much more.
