A massive boost to Kent of £77million was delivered thanks to the Open Golf Championship, researchers have said.

The direct economic boost was £25m and television exposure was worth more than £50m, said Peter Dawson, chief executive of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club.

But traffic problems and concerns that Sandwich was cut off to visitors have put pressure on organisers to ensure it does not happen again when the championship returns in future.

Dover District cabinet member for access and property Nigel Collor said: "We have learnt from it."

Mr Dawson said R&A officials and Kent authorities were planning transport improvements for a return of the Open.

The research, carried out by researchers at Sheffield Hallam University for the R&A, was presented to Sandwich Chamber of Commerce and Deal and Walmer Chamber of Trade.

The concerns of traders was heard at the meeting.

Southeastern said about 37,000 people came to kent by train including fast train services. See picture, left.
